0153 (Over Peover, Cheshire)
A sandstone multiple dial, a memorial to the Mainwaring brothers drowned at sea, although the inscriptions do not seem to refer to this event in any way. The motto on the SW face reads 'Carpere vel noli nostra vel ede tua' (Don't criticise the time I give you but publish your own). It is a quote from Martial, Epigram 1.91 line 2. The SE face has 'Decli 45 deg in y lat 53d 15m J717'. It is not known whether the names 'John' and 'Edwards' around the roots of the gnomons refer to the brothers or possibly to the maker.
