SRN 1670 Balderstone, Lancashire
SRN 1670. This most unusual dial was restored in 1907 by the firm of Francis Barker in London. It measures a full five feet across, and is hidden away in a churchyard at Balderstone, Lancs. The motto is: "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom", and a peripheral inscription reads: "In Memory of the Revd J Arthur Rushton MA....etc" Rushton was the vicar of Balderstone in 1900, so it is not clear why the dial needed restoration as early as 1907. It has a very fine and slender gnomon for its size, and possibly was damaged by an early act of vandalism. This is the only photograph we have, and more detail on the dial plate would be welcome.
