A multiple dial from York, at the College Street end of the Minster. It has four dials facing the cardinal points, each with a metal gnomon. The gnomon on the North dial (facing us in the picture) was mounted upside-down until very recently. All gnomons on such polyhedral dials should be parallel to the earth's axis and, therefore, to one another. The three visible gnomons do indeed now appear to be parallel. |
