Dials of Distinction - Number 22

A general view of this interesting dial

Crucifix Dial at Baslow, Derbyshire

Go, love thy Maker as thou ought,

The brotherhood as well;

Then honour England's King as taught,

Nor let thy native land be bought,

 While hours I have tell.

CRUCIFIX PILLAR DIAL - Crucifix dials are a special type of sundial that you often see in churchyards or formal gardens. Although they look to be quite complicated they are in fact very simple and are basically equinoctial dials with the dial inclined at the angle of the latitude and the edge of the crucifix casting the shadow.

Verse from 'Ye Sundial Booke' - T. Geoffrey W. Henslow
