SRN 4072 (Multiple, Christ Church, Oxford)

This (SRN 4072) is the grandest of the three dials at Christ Church, Oxford.  It is based on Hegge's drawing of a dial by Nicolaus Kratzer, which in the 16th century stood just across the garden wall in the grounds of Corpus Christi College.  With 11 dials and 24 gnomons, it is an outstanding piece of work.  It was designed by David Brown, winning the college's design competition in 1995, and was also 'commended' in the BSS Design Competition 2000.  It is dedicated to the memory of Miss Joan Page, a long-standing College Secretary and benefactor.  Kratzer, among many other achievements, was astronomer to Henry VIII.  It was recorded of him that 'he drank ever in the German fashion, and could swallow all the liquor that there was', but clearly this did not hinder him in his work.
